Our Goals

Our Goals

Problem

Refugees, whose lives have been upended by war and conflict, are arriving in San Diego with limited to no English, little understanding of American culture, and practically no material resources. The 90 day resettlement period provided by the federal government is insufficient and not enough time for refugees to acclimate to their new lives, especially in a city as expensive as San Diego.

Partners

  • Immigration lawyers to assist with documentation issues
  • English language courses provided by other nonprofits
  • Nonprofits or orgs that assist with job placement
  • Food bank to provide nutritious food for our distribution
  • Professional counselors to provide mental health intervention

Behaviors

The refugees we work with must be willing to, with our support, do the following:

  • Take risks
  • Take initiative and leadership in their resettlement process
  • Take on and face challenges
  • Have an eagerness to acclimate to life in the US

Short-term Outcome

Refugees and migrants are connected to community, plugged into the services they need, and feeling confident about their ability to acclimate to life in the US.

Long-term Outcomes

Refugees and migrants are self-reliant: Surrounded by a supportive network and community, refugees have everything they need to make decisions for themselves and their families.

People

RN primarily serves refugees, both newly arrived and more established. However, RN makes space for all migrants who are fleeing poverty and conflict no matter their immigration status.

Interventions

  • Tutoring and Homework Help
  • Food Distribution
  • Wholistic Case Management

Big Idea

When refugees take the lead, solutions to their own challenges are realized through relationship that is long-term and deeply culturally aware.

Outputs

  • Refugees with access to free, nutritious food and meal options
  • Refugee children assisted with tutoring and homework assistance
  • Refugee children enrolled in engaging and fun summer activities
  • Refugees enrolled in the programs and institutions necessary for their acclimation to the US

10-year Target

In the next 10 years, RefugeeNet aims to hire one case worker for every language group that we serve. The core languages we want to hire for are Swahili, Spanish (for Latin American and Haitian migrants), Burmese, and Pashto.

Reason

Because every human being deserves the opportunity to rebuild their life.

Inputs

  • Experienced Staff Team
  • Philanthropic Funding
  • Established Brand
  • Dedicated Volunteers
  • Organizational Partnerships
  • Engaged Board
  • Systems and Procedures

Mission

RefugeeNet is a refugee led, San Diego based nonprofit that provides needed services to refugees and migrants through culturally informed case work, tutoring, and food distribution.

Pathways

  • Size: High (RN seeks to grow the size of its programming to reach more refugees with its services)
  • Sustainability: Medium (RN seeks to be a long-term organization, remaining a constant in the lives of the refugees we are currently serving)

Vision

A San Diego where every refugee family has what they need to thrive and be self-reliant citizens of the United States.
